David Mensah spent three years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Without money for a lawyer and with no family to advocate for him, he had resigned himself to a life behind bars. That changed when KUTH Foundation's Legal Aid team reviewed his case.
"I had given up hope," David recalls, his voice steady but his eyes reflecting the pain of those years. "I wrote letters to everyone I could think of. No one responded. Then one day, a lawyer from KUTH came to the prison. She actually listened to my story."
Barrister Ngozi Eze, KUTH's Director of Legal Aid, took on David's case pro bono. After reviewing the evidence and interviewing witnesses, she uncovered significant inconsistencies in the prosecution's case. The real perpetrator had since been identified in connection with similar crimes.
"David's case is unfortunately not unique," explains Barrister Eze. "Many people are imprisoned simply because they cannot afford legal representation. The justice system, while designed to protect everyone, often fails those without resources."
After 18 months of legal work, appeals, and advocacy, David was exonerated and released. But KUTH's support didn't end there. The organization provided him with reintegration support including temporary housing, skills training, and psychological counseling.
Today, David runs a small carpentry business and volunteers with KUTH, sharing his story to raise awareness about the need for legal aid. "KUTH gave me back my life," he says. "Now I want to help others find their freedom too."
David has also become an advocate for prison reform, speaking at community events and engaging with policymakers. His story has been instrumental in securing additional funding for KUTH's Legal Aid program.
"Every person in that prison has a story," David reflects. "Many, like me, just need someone to believe them and fight for them. KUTH was that someone for me."
